Kris slides out in Finland

Kris has been forced out of a podium position on the second full day of Rally Finland, the eighth round of the 2015 FIA World Rally Championship.

The DS 3 WRC driver started today’s schedule in third overall, and he focused his efforts on finding a comfortable pace that could keep some pressure on the leading Volkswagens while building a cushion over his closest rival, fourth-placed Mads Ostberg.

Everything went well during the first loop of four tests, as Kris and co-driver Paul Nagle posted some top-three times and revelled in the fact that their Citroen had been restored to full health by a full transmission change on Friday evening.

However, on the second run through Jukojarvi, heavy rain made conditions treacherous and Kris was caught out. ‘With the rain, we had changed the set-up before setting off on Jukojärvi 2,’ Kris said. ‘After a few kilometres, there was a right-hand bend which tightened over a jump. I stayed in the middle, like I did on the first run, but when I turned into the corner I was already in the mud.

‘I tried everything to keep control of the car despite the aquaplaning. The car hit a tree on the outside of the corner, breaking the front left-hand suspension. It’s a real shame, because we were on course for a good result. We had an excellent feeling in the car. I wasn’t under pressure and I felt good, but that’s just how it goes sometimes.’

Citroen Racing has already said that Kris should be able to rejoin the event tomorrow under Rally 2 regulations. That means he’ll be able to get more experience of the roads used in the single stage on offer on Sunday – and he’ll also have a chance to score some points during the second running of the test, which counts as the Power Stage.
