Kris Meeke scored a dramatic victory in Barbados when he struggled through Day 2 with only front wheel drive in his Toyota Corolla WRC.
On Day One, Kris built up a 54 second lead, managing to hold off local ace Paul Bourne in a Subaru S10, until he crashed on SS4.
Kris needed all the time he gained on Saturday, when on SS13, on the first stage of Day 2, the prop-shaft on the Corolla broke. The mechanics were able to carry out some make-shift repairs to get Kris out on the road again.
Over the next 10 stages, Kris was able to get the most from his “two wheel drive” World Rally Car, at the same time mindful of the stress on the front differential and drive shafts. His managed his lead, to win the event by a margin of 17s.
“Rallying in this country in infectious.” said Kris. “Never have I seen so many enthusiastic fans. There are just amazing people, and have made me and Paul feel more than welcome. To be honest, I was gutted when the propshaft broke. I thought for sure the rally was over, but all credit to the mechanics. A little bit of improvisation, and off we went. I wasn’t expecting to hold the lead, but after a couple of stages, I was able to just carry enough speed without stressing the drive-train too much. It’s a credit to all involved in organising the event.”
“OK, we will have a bit of a party tonight.. sure we’re in Barbados!!”
